My Neighbor’s Cupboard is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal of ensuring that no one goes without a basic need. The organization, a subsidiary of Crosses for Losses, was originally formed in June 2013 to help neighbors affected by the devastating Black Forest fire. They set up shop in Penrose, Colorado on May 12, 2018 to “provide a helping hand up to our neighbors within and throughout surrounding communities that are facing financial hardships, including our seniors, veterans, and those whose paycheck doesn’t stretch far enough each week.” As they say, “Going hungry should never be an option!”

My Neighbor’s Cupboard’s distribution center, located at 409 Broadway in Penrose CO, is set up like a grocery store where neighbors can pick out specific items without having to “qualify” for assistance. Food (including fresh produce, meat, bread, and a LOT of other items), diapers, pet food, hygiene items and household items are all generally available. They also work with local schools to help keep kids fed on weekends and during school breaks.

Just to give you an idea of the impact My Neighbor’s Cupboard makes on the local community, they gave 11,815 pounds of food to 708 people just in the month of March 2019! The organization also played a huge role in helping furloughed Federal employees make it through the January government shutdown. During that time, they gave out an average of 498 lbs per DAY!

My Neighbor’s Cupboard recently hosted the Valley-Wide Health System’s Heart and Eagle Mobile Medical & Dental Unit. This is a great benefit to the community as medical and dental services for this community are MANY miles away. They hope to make this a regularly scheduled event.

My Neighbor’s Cupboard is currently in the process of raising money to acquire a larger facility with the goal of becoming a gathering place for the local community that will also provide community and social services currently unavailable in the Penrose area. They plan to have a commercial kitchen at the new location so they can offer cooking classes.

Their 1-year anniversary is coming up in May and they’ll be throwing a BIG PARTY that you won’t want to miss! Be sure follow My Neighbor’s Cupboard on Facebook here –> @MyNeighborsCupboardCO so you can stay in the loop regarding their latest updates and events!
