The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey has been notified by the prestigious Sunset International Wine Competition that they have been awarded fifteen medals, including three golds, for their wines. The As Above So Below – The Theurgist, a well-balanced red wine, was awarded gold at 94 points. The Theurgist combines Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Pearl, and St. Vincent grapes grown and produced in Colorado to deliver an enlightening experience. For another gold, the Sangre de Cristo Nouveau scored 93 points. This bright, fruity wine is quite reminiscent of a sangria or sweet Beujolais. The Abbey’s third gold went to the 2022 Chardonnay at 91 points. Judges recognized its “clean fresh apple and orange blossom” notes and a “nice lengthy finish.”

“This competition is juried by the best judges in the industry who understand the Western palate and lifestyle and judge with that in mind. We are extremely pleased with these results,” says The Winery at Holy Cross Owner Larry Oddo.

With nearly 3,000 entries this year, the judging took place in Santa Rosa, California, in May. To have a wine receive a medal here is no small achievement. The competition is one of the most respected and has the honor and distinction of recognizing the best wines produced internationally.

“Having continued success in this competition is reinforcement to me that my skills at making quality wines are consistent and are equal to some of the best winemakers in the world,” says Head Winemaker Jeff Stultz.

The winery received eight silver awards:

2022 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve
2022 Colorado Viognier
